Does 23 and Me Upload Ancestry Dna Results

In this Upload-Download series, we'll embrace each major vendor:

  • How to download raw information files from the vendor
  • How to upload raw information files to the vendor, if possible
  • Other mainstream vendors where you can upload this vendor's files

Please note that downloading your Dna file from any vendor does non affect your matching results at that vendor. You are merely downloading a copy of your raw DNA file.

Uploading TO 23andMe

This function is easy with 23andMe, because 23andMe doesn't take any other vendor'south files. There is no ability to upload TO 23andMe. Yous have to test with 23andMe if you lot want Deoxyribonucleic acid results from 23andMe.

Downloading FROM 23andMe

In order to upload your autosomal Deoxyribonucleic acid file to another testing vendor, or GedMatch, for either matching or ethnicity, you'll need to first download the Dna file from 23andMe.

Download Stride 1

Sign on to your account at 23andMe.

23andMe download

Under your name at the upper right-manus corner of your page, past clicking on the little circle with your initials, you'll see "Browse Raw Information." Click in that location.

Download Footstep v

A few minutes later, an email will arrive that says this:

23andMe download 5

Click on the dark-green button in the eastward-postal service which will take you back to 23andMe to sign in.

Download Step six

After you lot sign in, you'll see that your download file is set. Click on "Download Raw Data" and yous volition run into the post-obit.

23andMe download 6

Your raw data file will be downloaded to your computer where you'll need to store it in a location and by a name that yous tin can find.

The file name will exist something like "genome_Roberta_Estes_v2_v3_Full_xxxxxxxx" where the xs is a long number. I would suggest adding the discussion 23andMe to the front end when you salve the file on your system.

Nigh vendors desire an unopened cypher file, so if you want to open your file, offset re-create it to another name. Otherwise, you'll accept to download again.

23andMe Deoxyribonucleic acid File Uploads to Other Vendors

23andMe files can be in one whatever one of iv formats:

  • V2 – the earliest tests taken at 23andMe. V2 examination takers were offered an upgrade to V3.
  • V3 – V3 files kickoff December 2010 through December 2013
  • V4 – V4 files beginning Dec 2013 through Baronial 2017
  • V5 – V5 files offset August 2017 through present, Baronial 2021

The changes in the files due to chip differences sometimes cause issues with uploads to other vendors who utilise other testing fries.

From below to >>>>>>> Family unit Tree Deoxyribonucleic acid Accepts * MyHeritage Accepts** GedMatch Accepts *** Beginnings Accepts LivingDNA Accepts ****
23andMe V2 No Aye Aye No Yes
23andMe V3 Yes Yes Yeah No Yes
23andMe V4 Yes Yes Yes No Aye
23andMe V5 Yes Yes Aye No Yep

* The upload to Family Tree DNA and matching is free, merely advanced tools including the chromosome browser and ethnicity require a one-time $19 unlock fee.

** At MyHeritage, the upload and matching is complimentary, only advanced tools require a one-time $29 unlock fee unless you are a MyHeritage subscriber. Yous can upload here and try a free subscription here.

*** At GedMatch, matching is gratuitous, merely the more than advanced features require a Tier 1 subscription for $x per month.

**** LivingDNA accepts files, but they use a different bit and their matching is still a piece of work-in-process.

23andMe Testing and DNA File Upload Strategy

My recommendation, if you've tested at 23andMe, depending on your test version, is as follows:

  • V2 – Upgrade which means retest at 23andMe to newer test version, or only test at some other vendor
  • V3, V4, or V5 – Upload to Family unit Tree Deoxyribonucleic acid, MyHeritage and GedMatch
